Barton Sutter (December 15, 1949-) was raised in small towns in the Upper Midwest and received a degree from Southwest Minnesota State University and a M.A. in creative writing from Syracuse University. He worked in Boston and Minneapolis as a printer for ten years before becoming a freelance writer and a part-time professor at St. John’s University; the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities; and the University of Minnesota, Duluth. He taught full-time at University of Wisconsin, Superior but retired from that position in 2010. Now, Sutter lives in Duluth with his wife.

Sutter is a poet and novelist and the only author to win the Minnesota Book Award in three different categories: Fiction, Poetry, and Creative Nonfiction. Primarily a poet, Sutter works in several genres and has published poems, essays, and stories in dozens of magazines, has written seven books, and has written several dramas. His work includes: My Father’s War and Other Stories, The Book of Names: New and Selected Poems, and Cold Comfort: Life at the Top of the Map.
