Dan Brennan (September 5, 1917-March 5, 2002) moved to Minneapolis from North Dakota with his mother and sister after the death of his father. As an aspiring author, Brennan hitchhiked to Oxford, Mississippi to meet William Faulkner, one of his inspirations, and later joined the army because of Faulkner’s war stories. During the war, Brennan flew 80 missions with the RAF and even survived three crashes. After returning home to Minnesota, Brennan wrote novels and worked as a journalist, police reporter, feature writer, and film critic in Minneapolis newspapers. He entered the political sphere, writing speeches and press for Hubert Humphrey’s senate campaign, and he was good friends with Jim Klobuchar.
Never So Young Again, Brennan’s first novel, was published in England in 1942. It received praise overseas and was eventually published in the United States as well. Over his career, Brennan published 25 novels and was working on another one when he died. Additionally, he wrote short stories and many articles about hunting, which he enjoyed in his free time. Brennan’s fictional works range from war stories to crime stories to works about racial insurrection. Some of his novels include Blood in the Sky, One of Our Bombers is Missing, Insurrection!, and The Velvet Rut.
