David Haynes (August 30, 1955-) was born in St. Louis, but he attended college in Minnesota, receiving his BA from Macalester College and his MA from Hamline University. For fifteen years, he taught at St. Paul middle schools. Haynes worked with National Board for Professional Teaching Standards to develop reforms in teaching. He has also received a fellowship from the Minnesota State Arts Board. Now, Haynes is a professor at Southern Methodist University in Texas where he is the director of creative writing.

Haynes is an adult and young adult novelist with over twelve published works. In 1992, he won the Minnesota Voices Project for his book Right by My Side, which was also selected as one of 1994’s best books for young adults by the American Library Association. In 1996, Granta magazine named Haynes as one of the best American novelists for young adult readers. More of his work includes The Full Matilda: A Novel, The Everyday Magic of Walterlee Higgins, All American Dream Dolls, and Business as Usual.
