David Mura (June 17, 1952-) grew up in Illinois. He is a sansei, or third generation Japanese-American, and his heritage is an integral part to his writing. Mura earned his B.A. in English from Grinnell College, Iowa. He did graduate work at the University of Minnesota and received his MFA from Vermont College. Mura has been very involved with The Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis, serving on the board of directors and teaching poetry and creative nonfiction classes.

As a playwright, poet, performance artist, critic, and creative nonfiction writer, Mura has earned many awards for his writing. His book Turning Japanese: Memoirs of a Sansei won the 1991 Minnesota Book Award, and he won the award again in 1997 with Where the Body Meets Memory: An Odyssey of Race, Sexuality, and Identity. Mura has created several performance pieces, including one called Secret Colors with author Alexs Pate. Mura’s other works include Famous Suicides of the Japanese Empire, After We Lost Our Way, and more.
