Emma L. Brock (June 11, 1886-August 17, 1974) grew up in Fort Shaw, Montana before moving to Minnesota to study first at the University of Minnesota and later at the Minneapolis School of Art. She worked first as an illustrator for other people’s books but in 1929 started writing and illustrating her own children’s books. She also worked in the Minneapolis Public Library and in the New York Public Library.

Brock published over thirty children’s books, and almost all of them were published through Knopf. Many of her books were animal-themed, such as Here Comes Kristie, Patty on Horseback, and The Greedy Goat. Brock’s Kristie series is her most well-known work, and the first book was even made into an NBC television special.
