Frederick Manfred (January 6, 1912-September 7, 1994) grew up in Iowa and attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Manfred grew up on a farm where he it was difficult for him to find time to read, especially since his father could not read. It was at Calvin College where Manfred began writing, publishing seventeen short stories and poems in school publications. After graduating, Manfred travelled widely and worked a variety of jobs until 1943 when he decided to write full time.
Born Frederick Feikema, Manfred changed his professional name after a few poorly received novels, and his later autobiographical novels were very successful. Before becoming a novelist, Manfred worked in politics and journalism. A University of Minnesota writing fellowship enabled him to publish his first novel in 1944. Manfred’s books were inspired by his travels across America and his native Midwest homeland.
