Gordon R. Dickson (November 1, 1923-January 31, 2001) was born in Edmonton, Canada and moved to Minnesota with his mother in 1937 after the death of his father. In 1948, Dickson attended the University of Minnesota, earning his BA in creative writing. During his graduate work, he studied with Sinclair Lewis and Poul Anderson, among others. Dickson served in the Army during the World War II and was a lifelong space devotee, attending most of the Apollo launches.
Dickson wrote speculative fiction, focusing on science fiction and fantasy. From 1969-1971, he was even the president of the Science Fiction Writers of America. His Childe Cycle novels—such as Dorsai! and Soldier, Ask Not—were his most popular works during his lifetime, but he died before he could complete the series. Dickson won three Hugo Awards, a Nebula Award, and several other awards for his fiction.
