James Beardsley Hendryx (December 9, 1880-March 1, 1963) grew up in Sauk Centre, where his father owned and published the Sauk Centre Herald. Before moving to Ohio for a time, Hendryx attended the University of Minneapolis for two years. After graduation, Hendryx worked as a reporter, insurance agent, hardware salesman, and as a purchasing agent for a tannery. He also wrote many stories.
Hendryx is the author of more than 50 western novels and anthologies, and he wrote hundreds of short stories, too. He is best known for his characters from the outlaw community of Halfaday Creek in the Yukon. Hendryx penned hundreds of stories featuring these characters over the span of 25 years. His stories were published in magazines such as West, Dime Western, New Western, and Argosy. The Halfaday Creek stories are set during the gold rush of the 1890s. Many of Hendryx’s novels took place in Canada.
