Julie Schumacher (1958-) grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. She graduated from Oberlin College and proceeded on to Cornell University, where she completed an MFA program in fiction. Now, she lives in St. Paul with her family and teaches at the University of Minnesota. She teaches creative writing courses and has won several teaching awards including a Distinguished Educator Award, The College of Continuing Education University of Minnesota, and Scholar of the College, College of Liberal Arts, University of Minnesota.

Schumacher’s first published story was written for an undergraduate assignment, and it was published in The Best American Short Stories 1983. Since then, she has published many other stories and essays. Schumacher has also written five novels for younger readers, several novels for older readers, and a coloring book called Doodling For Academics. She won the ALA Notable Book of the Year award for her novel The Body is Water and also won a Minnesota Book Award in 2007.
