DiCamillo

Kate DiCamillo

Kate DiCamillo (March 25, 1964-) was born in Philadelphia but moved to Florida when she was five. Because she had chronic pneumonia as a child, DiCamillo spent a lot of time reading. She did not start writing seriously until she was nearly thirty, working in a book warehouse. There, she discovered her love for children’s literature and has not stopped writing since.

DiCamillo writes chapter and picture books for children and is best known for her novels The Tale of Despereaux and Because of Winn-Dixie, both of which have been adapted into movies. The Tale of Despereaux won a Newbery Medal in 2004. A few of her other works include the Mercy Watson series and The Magician’s Elephant, winner of the 2010 Minnesota Book Award for Young People’s Literature. DiCamillo was named the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature by the Library of Congress for the term 2014-2015.
