Louise Erdrich (June 7, 1954-) was born in Little Falls, Minnesota. Louise is an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians. Erdrich received her BA from Dartmouth College and her MA in writing from Johns Hopkins University. She remained connected to Dartmouth College as their writer-in-residence. Now, Erdrich is the owner of Birchbark Books, an independent bookstore in Minneapolis, and she has hosted writing workshops at the Turtle Mountain Indian Reserve with her sister Heid.
Erdrich has written many novels as well as books for children, volumes of poetry, and a memoir. Her awards include the National Book Critics Circle Award for her debut novel, Love Medicine, and the National Book Award in 2010 for her novel The Round House. Plague of Doves won the Anisfield-Wolf Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Erdrich’s works often feature her Native American heritage, and she is a significant voice in Native American literature.
