Marion Dane Bauer (November 20, 1938-) grew up in Oglesby, Illinois, where her father worked as a chemist in a mill next to their house. As a child, Bauer spent a lot of time alone, making up stories with her toys. At school, she was an outsider, which later served as inspiration for some of her books. Bauer graduated with a teaching degree and then became a homemaker and foster parent, writing in her spare time.

As a children’s author, Bauer has written novels, chapter books for early readers, non-fiction and historical books, and picture books. She has won several awards for her writing, such as the Jane Addams Children’s Book Award for her book Rain of Fire and a Newbery Medal for On My Honor. Bauer often tackles difficult topics in her books and makes them easy for children to comprehend. She lives in Falcon Heights, Minnesota where she continues writing.
