Maud Hart Lovelace (April 25, 1892-March 11, 1980) is the author of over 18 books, including ten children’s books in the Betsy-Tacy series. She grew up in Mankato, Minnesota, and began writing as a child. She studied at the University of Minnesota but never finished her degree. During a trip to California, she sold her first short story to the Lost Angeles Times at age 18. Lovelace married Delos Lovelace, author of the original novelization of King Kong, in 1917.

Lovelace’s Betsy-Tacy series, published from 1940-1955, is set in a town based on early twentieth-century Mankato. In addition to children’s books, Lovelace wrote historical fiction based in Minnesota. Other works include Early Candlelight and One Stayed at Welcome, co-authored with her husband. The Maud Hart Lovelace Book Award for children’s books was established in 1979 by the Mankato Friends of the Library association.
