Michael Dennis Browne (1940-) moved from England to the U.S. in 1956, and after graduating from the University of Iowa, he proceeded to teach at Iowa, Bennington, Columbia, and the University of Minnesota. He is now a Professor Emeritus at the University of Minnesota, where he has taught writing for 39 years. In addition to writing, Browne has an interest in music, writing librettos, and working with many musicians. He and his family live in Minnesota.

Browne is a poet. He has won two Minnesota Book Awards in the past for his poetry, one in 1993 and one in 1998. Some of his works include The Wife of Winter, Smoke from the Fires, and Things I Can’t Tell You. His most recently-published collection of poems is called Chimes, and it was published in 2017. He has also written a picture book entitled Give Her the River.
