Pete Hautman (September 29, 1952-) was born in Berkeley, California, and his family moved to St. Louis Park, Minnesota in 1958. He attended the Minneapolis College of Art & Design and the University of Minnesota, but he left college without graduating. He worked several jobs that he describes himself as ill-suited for before deciding to write a novel. Hautman and author Mary Logue split their time between Golden Valley, Minnesota and Stockholm, Wisconsin.

Drawing Dead, Hautman’s first book, was published in 1993. Since then he has written many novels for adults, young adults, and middle grade readers. He has won the Minnesota Book Award four times, and his 2004 novel Godless won a National Book Award. A few of Hautman’s other novels include Rash, Sweetblood, Rag Man, The Obsidian Blade, Mr. Was, and many more.
