Shannon Gibney

Shannon Gibney (?-?) was adopted by white parents in Michigan in 1975, and Gibney identifies as a transracial adoptee. Race, gender, class, family, power, and identity are themes which run through much of her scholarly and literary work. Gibney teaches English at Minneapolis College. As an activist interested in sharing untold stories and giving marginalized people a voice, Gibney works with refugees, immigrants, indigenous communities, communities of color, and ex-offenders. Her work has received many awards and her books are taught across the United States in many schools.

Shannon Gibney has written two novels, both of which won a Minnesota Book Award. See No Color is about a young, mixed race teenager trying to understand her identity, and Dream Country is about five members of an African-and-American family pursuing freedom throughout five generations. Gibney has also contributed to several anthologies and has written short stories and articles that can be found online.
