Steven Brust (November 23, 1955-) is a fantasy and science fiction novelist, born and raised in Minnesota. His parents were activists in the Workers League, which was a predecessor to the Socialist Equity Party. Brust self-identifies as a Trotskyist sympathizer. Brust and some other Minnesota-based authors started a writing group together called The Scribblies, and Brust is also part of a folk band called Cat’s Laughing. In 1993, he released a solo album called A Rose for Iconoclastes.

In 1983, Brust published his first novel, Jhereg. It is the first installment of his Vlad Taltos series, in which fifteen books are already written and four more planned. Brust’s second series, The Khaavren Romances, is set in the same world as the Vlad Taltos series, Dragaera. Brust has written several standalone novels as well as numerous short stories. Brust’s novels are unique because of his writing style, which varies from book to book.
