Wing Young Huie

Wing Young Huie (May 3, 1955-) was born in Duluth. In 1979, he earned his B.A. in journalism from the University of Minnesota. Huie became a full-time, professional photographer in 1989 and has produced many influential and award-winning projects since then. Many of Huie’s photographs are set in St. Paul and Minneapolis neighborhoods. They focus on social issues such as race, immigration, gender, homelessness, Lutheranism and faith, dementia, and youth life. His projects capture the Twin Cities’ diverse and fluctuating urban landscape.

Several books have been published to highlight Huie’s photographs, including The University Avenue Project: The Language of Urbanism Volume 1 and Volume 2, Frogtown: Photographs and Conversations in an Urban Neighborhood, and Chinese-ness: The Meanings of Identity and the Nature of Belonging. Huie has received many awards and fellowships for his work. In 2019, Huie was awarded a Minnesota Book Award for Chinese-ness. He is also the first photographer to be honored with the McKnight Distinguished Artist Award.
