Patricia Hampl

Patricia Hampl (March 12, 1946-) grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota where she attended Catholic schools until college, when she studied at the University of Minnesota for her BA and the University of Iowa for her MFA. She is now Regents Professor and McKnight Distinguished Professor at the University of Minnesota where she teaches in the MFA program.

Hampl has written several memoirs about her family, her Czech heritage, spirituality, and more. She also writes stories and essays. In 2008, her book The Florist’s Daughter won the Minnesota Book Award for Memoir & Creative Nonfiction. She has also written many other award-winning books, such as Blue Arabesque: A Search for the Sublime, A Romantic Education, and others. Hampl’s writing springs from minutiae and detail, showing the wonder of the ordinary.
